On the East coast of Cyprus near to the border with the ghost town of Famagusta is the bustling little town of Paralimni. The word Paralimni means "by the lake". Historically, Paralimni was built on the shores of a shallow lake, which filled with water only in the wintertime. In the beginning of the 20th century, as a result of reclamation work, the whole of the lakebed was reclaimed for agricultural purposes.
Despite the amount of new development in progress on the outskirts Paralimni town centre retains it's charm. There is a beautiful town square dominated by the church and a newer plaza across the road complete with an ornate fountain. The newer square is bordered by some trendy cafe bars and traditional taverns too where you can relax with the locals watching life go by. The towns streets are quaint and there is an air of timelessness about the place which is enhanced by the pavement cafe's where the locals spend the warm Cyprus afternoons drinking coffee and playing backgammon. The one way traffic slowly winds through the narrow streets mixing with the shoppers who use the roads too because the cafe bars spill out onto any available space on the pavement.
The countryside surrounding Paralimni has rich red soil and is famous for its picturesque windmills - used to draw water from underground aquifers to irrigate the surrounding land. Before the rise of tourism, the rich agricultural land surrounding Paralimni was the source of Paralimni's wealth, and is still of great importance.
Cyprus has a great public bus network with a bus stop just a few minutes walk. There are several routes taking you in all directions from Pernera, to Protaras to Ayia Napa and even Larnaca. It is very inexpensive and is a great way to explore the island.
