In this article, we will be looking at the wine areas in Portugal.  If you ever find yourself in the country, these are regions you should visit for the best wines.

Known in some circles as the poorer cousin to Spain, Portugal happens to be one of the oldest wine regulated countries in the world. The wine tradition in Portugal dates as far back as the Roman Empire. The country began wine exports to England in 1703 and as early as 1758 a region in Portugal (Regiao Demarcada) was credited as being one of the first areas ever to produce wine in the world. There are many wine regions in Portugal. However, we would only be listing the ones I consider to be the best;

  1. Lisbon

The city of Lisbon is situated very close to the Atlantic Ocean. On the northwest area of the city, you would find the wine region known as Lisboa, previously known as Estremadura. In Lisboa, you are sure to find a wide range of styles and quantities as the area is famous for producing a lot of wines.  Lisbon is well worth a visit try staying in one of its beautiful hotels or holiday rentals.

  1. Alentejo

The Alentejo region just north of the Algarve is quite massive, boasting about a third of Portugal as a whole. It recently won the USA Today’s Reader’s Choice award as the best wine area to visit. Alentejo boasts vibrant soil, undulating plains, and a large countryside. A lot of towns in Alentejo deal mainly in forestry, livestock, and agriculture. You can be sure to get the best traditional wines, smoke hams,  Portuguese cheeses and homemade sausages during your visit to the region. For those who might want to be a little adventurous, I would suggest you head to Cartuxa at Quinta de Valbom; this is an ancient winery (1776) that was previously inhabited by monks.

  1. Dao

Located north of Alentejo, the Dao area is situated around the old city of Viseu. Surrounding the area are mountains that protect the area from the chilled temperature of the ocean. Dao has a high altitude, about 200m above sea level which allows for good acidity, nice aroma and slower ripening for wines.

  1. Madeira

Birthplace of the famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, Madeira is a lovely island known for its wines which can be stored for a long period of time. Madeira, located on the Atlantic with beautiful landscapes, has been classified as a UNESCO heritage site. The temperatures in Madeira are mild at all times of the year. Irrespective of your taste, you would definitely find a wine that suits you in Madeira. However, you love it, be it sweet or dry.  Well worth a visit huge amount to see and do.  A holiday rental in Madeira lets say a villa with pool is an ideal vacation base.

Madeira is an ideal spot for tourist, in 2006/2007, it was awarded the Guinness world record for the most massive fireworks display in the world.

In this article, we would be looking at four must-see places for you to visit during your stay in Porto. The first on the list is;

Palacio da Bolsa

The location of the previous stock exchange in Porto, rich in history and located at Rua Ferreira Borges, which happens to be the headquarters of the Chamber of Commerce. The Palacio da Bolsa was built on top of a Franciscan monastery, with a magnificent interior which is divided into various rooms and salons with each room a wonderful work of art. If you are lucky enough to gain access to the Portrait Room filled with a collection of uniformed monarchs you would marvel at the beauty of art.

Cais da Ribeira

The riverside in Porto is filled with narrow streets and crossing alleys that are shielded from the sun. The Ribeira is a fancy collection of townhouses with bright tangerine and mustard paintings which faces the River Douro. It is a pleasant mix of flavour and colour. The Cais da Ribeira is filled with restaurants and cafes that make the riverside fun and interesting, a perfect site for relaxation. The Cais da Ribeira is located on the north side of the River Douro in Porto.

Oporto Bridges

Ponte de Dom Luis I

One of the most remarkable landmarks in Portugal is the Dom Luis I bridge. The bridge covers the River Douro and links Porto on the south side with Vila Nova de Gaia. The bridge sweeps through with a two-level aspect which a reflection of Porto’s proud and social composition. A magnificent view of the bridge could be seen while standing on the Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar while on the south side.

Torre dos Clerigos

Situated in Rua São Filipe de Neri, Porto, the Torre dos Clerigos pierces the skylines of Porto like a very massive needle. Arguably the most prominent landmark in Porto, it is about 75-meters high. You would require extra stamina and endurance to be able to make it up 240 flight of stairs all the way to the top. I assure you if you can complete this feat it would be worth your while. You would be welcomed with a magnificent panorama of the coastlines, the river and the Douro valley gives you one the best views of the second largest city in Portugal.

Whenever you make the journey to Porto, make sure you visit the places mentioned above, as your visit would be considered incomplete and unadventurous without checking these places out.
