The Amsterdam ArenA was built around 1993 and 1996, the stadium was a replacement of Ajax’s home De Meer, which had a small capacity and had become too small for the club.
The Amsterdam ArenA was officially opened on the 14th of August 1996 with a match between Ajax and AC Milan. It was also the first stadium in Europe with a coverable roof. Shortly after the opening, it came into notice that the design had not accounted for good grass growing conditions and this led to the pitch getting renewed up to 5 times a year, though the issue was later resolved with the installation of innovative grass growing technology.
The ArenA counts with a total of 2,229 business seats and a further 820 seats in sky boxes. The stands are among the steepest in Europe. The ArenA is a host to great football teams like Real Madrid and Juventus.
How to get there
The Amsterdam ArenA is located in a modern office park in the south east of Amsterdam just 10km for the city centre. You can either reach the ArenA by train or metro, be assured of regular services especially from the train, the metro might take slightly longer and usually stops at the same station. If using a car you can access the ArenA from the A2 motorway from exit 1 and turn east. Follow the directions to the designated parking areas. On days where there no matches one can park at the tranferium underneath the stadium.
Tickets for the games can be purchased online or at one of the Ticketbox pre-sale points. If there are extra tickets they can be bought for the ticket window at the ArenA on the day of the match. The tickets typically sell out a third to half of their home matches. The ticket prices depend on the opponent.
This is an ArenA you can view matches comfortably with your friends. Since the Amsterdam ArenA is part of an entertainment and shopping complex, which includes a large cinema and two of Holland’s principal concert halls you can have fun times with your friends too. There are also a few places to get some fast food or have a drink, though options remain rather limited.
